Storage Tips:
We know that storing hay in the south can be a challenge. Seems that some barns never have a problem, but others are not able to store it for long periods of time. You can extend the quality of your hay by following the following tips.

  • Make sure that your storage area has plenty of ventilation. A well-ventilated area will allow the hay to breathe. If you use fans in your barn during the day, please turn them off during the evening. Hay will absorb excess moisture from dew brought in from fans.

  • Provide a moisture barrier between the ground and your hay. If you have a dirt floor, a piece of 6-mil plastic covered by pallets or plywood will be an effective barrier.

  • If you have very wet weather, try burning a 60-watt light bulb in your storage area. The burning bulb will help reduce the humidity in the hay area. We do recommend that you place a guard around the bulb to prevent accidental breakage. The bulb will need to be kept free of dust and debris.

  • A 12x12x12 stall will hold around 150 small squares.
