Calculating hay needed:
As a rule, the average equine will consume 125 small bales per year.
Of course you will need to take into consideration the following factors; age, weather conditions, exercise levels, and TDN (total digestible nutrients) of the hay. If you know how many bales a week your equine is consuming, then you can multiply bales per week times 52 weeks. This will give you the average number of bales to purchase. We suggest that an additional 10 bales per animal be purchased to act as a buffer for emergencies, late breaking spring or unusual weather conditions.
We recommend that you talk to your supplier early in the year and discuss your needs. Purchase your hay as soon as it is available. If you don't have storage for the total amount, discuss this with your supplier: they may be able to store a portion of it for you.
